Frequently asked
Skiff alternatives FAQ
- Is Skiff shutting down?
- Yes. Skiff was acquired by Notion and all Skiff services, including Mail, Pages, Calendar and Drive, were sunset on August 9, 2024. Only automatic mail forwarding continued until February 9, 2025, and it could only be enabled before the shutdown date. Skiff accounts and data were not converted into Notion accounts, so you need to migrate to a different service.
- What is the best Skiff alternative?
- It depends on which Skiff product you used. For Mail, Proton Mail is the closest alternative with end-to-end encryption and a similar privacy focus, and Tuta is another strong encrypted option. For Pages, Notion is the natural destination since Skiff's team joined Notion, and Standard Notes is the best encrypted alternative. For Drive, Proton Drive and Nextcloud are the closest matches, and Proton Calendar replaces Skiff Calendar.
- Can I still access my Skiff data?
- No. All Skiff services were sunset on August 9, 2024, and automatic mail forwarding ended on February 9, 2025. If you did not export your data or enable mail forwarding before the shutdown, your Skiff data is no longer accessible. Skiff accounts were not converted into Notion accounts, so there is no way to recover the data through Notion.
- Is there a free Skiff alternative?
- Yes. Proton Mail has a free tier with 1 GB of storage and end-to-end encryption, and Proton Calendar and Proton Drive also have free tiers. Tuta has a free tier with 1 GB of storage. Notion has a free tier for individuals, and Standard Notes has a free tier with end-to-end encryption and unlimited device sync. Nextcloud is open source and free to self-host if you want full control.
- What should I check when replacing Skiff?
- Skiff was a suite of four products, so you may need more than one replacement. List which Skiff products you actually used, since Mail, Pages, Drive and Calendar map to different alternatives. If end-to-end encryption is why you chose Skiff, verify the replacement encrypts by default, because not every privacy-branded service does. Check storage limits on free tiers, as Proton Mail's free tier is 1 GB and Tuta's is also 1 GB, which may not fit a large mailbox.
