Why this exists

Most "alternatives to X" pages are a list of names with a marketing sentence each. That tells you a product exists; it does not tell you whether switching is worth it. We publish the parts that actually decide a migration: how much the two products overlap, how substitutable the alternative really is, whether the free tier is usable, what the paid plan starts at, whether you can self-host it, whether the source is open, and how hard the migration is.

How we research

Start from primary sources

Vendor pricing pages, licence files, and public documentation. Where we state a price, it is the vendor's published entry price, and we record when we last checked it.

Separate facts from judgement

Price, licence, and hosting model are facts. Overlap and substitutability are our editorial judgement. We label which is which so you can weigh them differently.

Say when we do not know

If a price or licence cannot be verified, the field is left blank or marked as not assessed. We do not guess to make a table look complete.

Revisit and correct

Software changes constantly. Pages carry a review date, and corrections we accept are reflected in the next revision.

How we handle vendor relationships

Editorial ranking is not for sale. A vendor cannot pay to raise its position, to remove a competitor, or to change an overlap rating. Where an outbound link is an affiliate link, it is marked as such, and it never affects whether a product appears or where it ranks. We do not accept payment for inclusion.

Switcher reports

Alongside our own research we publish reports from people who have actually migrated. Each report is moderated before it appears, and vendor representatives are required to disclose their affiliation. Reports never change editorial rank; they are shown as a separate community signal, and we only display aggregate percentages once there are enough reports for the number to mean something.

Corrections

If we have a price, licence, or capability wrong, tell us and we will fix it. Send the page and the source that shows the correct value to [email protected], or use the suggestion form. Corrections are treated as research leads and reviewed the same way as anything else.
